New Emission Fee (NEF) Charge update – FuelEU Maritime Regulation

Dear Valued Customer,
At ZIM, we are dedicated to achieving net zero decarbonization of our ocean fleet by 2050, making significant progress through investments in our fleet, and committed to complying with EU Maritime Regulations while maintaining reliable and efficient shipping services.

We wish to advise you that the FuelEU Maritime regulation came into effect on January 1st, 2025. The new FuelEU regulation sets requirements for the annual average greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) intensity of energy used by vessels trading within the EU or European Economic Area. Furthermore, the FuelEU will require carriers to perform a gradual reduction in the GHG intensity of energy used by vessels at European ports, starting with a 2% cut by 2025 and reaching 80% by 2050. For more details on the Fuel EU Maritime Regulation, Click here.

In order to meet this goal, ZIM will be required to shift to lower emissions fuels (instead of traditional marine fuel) in services calling EU ports, and this shift is expected to result in both additional operational costs as well as additional payments imposed on our customers. For convenience purposes, the additional payments due to the FuelEU Maritime regulation will be included in our existing NEF charge, which will reflect the selection of lower emission fuel in the relevant trades.

Therefore, we wish to advise you the following updates to the New Emission Fee (NEF) levels effective from February 8th, 2025 (*) till further notice, applying to FAK (Freight All Kind) cargo, in the trades as detailed below:
The rates are listed below for your convenience (the data refers to ZIM’s base ports in each trade).

Above charges are additional to the applicable base freight charge, THC, bunker, security and PSS related charges which are provided in ZIM's Tariff Calculator (U.S. trades are provided in www.boterates.com User: ZfreA6 Password: Access16!) as well as other charges for additional services, local charges and contingency charges.
At ZIM, we are committed ensuring compliance with the EU ETS while continuing to offer reliable and efficient shipping services. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to address the global challenge of climate change.
For details regarding specific agreements, other commodities, and other cargo types, such as reefer cargo, please approach our local office.

Sincerely,
ZIM Integrated Shipping
